Typography Lecture
Typography in film and games plays a large part in what massage is trying to be delivered to an audience. Take film titles for example. The choice of font can instantly tell an audience what genre, mood the film is for example, red blood splattered text is going to give over a different message to what pink fluffy text would. We know what the film with the blood text, in most cases is going to be a horror film of some sort and it is going to include a lot of murders. Pink fluffy text would tell us that we are about to watch a film that is more aimed at a female audience and is most cases is going to include some humor, so a rom-com would be the genre is most cases.
The use of typography through cinema history has changed a great deal, looking back at westerns from say for example the 1950's, the font that was used would usually be taken from wanted posters that would be used during the films, a typical font which you would expect to see in a western film. If we look at a more modern western such as The Missing by Ron Howard, the font that is used isn't a typical western text, its very clean and precise but the letters are quite spaced out which emphasises what the film is about which is a missing character.
When the majority of people of watch a film, the typography is the last thing they think and look at in a way of people part of the film, it is something that is ignored a great deal unless their are sub titles.
