To add a more realistic, 3D effect on your model, lighting is the key to bring your model to life. WE have shadows form, we can see textures become more apparent and overall things just look a lot more ascetically pleasing. In maya the 3 main sources of light we use are:
Directional Light
This usually represents light coming from the sun, so we have a very powerful light source that lights up a large area in your work space. It still makes the image look very flat and not yet has it come to life
Spot Light
Usually known as a spot of light used to light up an object from a specific location. By pressing the 'T' button on the keyboard it brings up 2 controls, one controlling the postion of the light and the other controlling the angle of the light coming down on the source. Example would be a torch light.
Point Light
Known as a point of light that is usually referred to a light coming front a lamp, room light so the object is usually lit from above or a high angle. Spreads the light out quite a bit but is quite soft on the object. To make the point light look more realistic, in the attribute editor, raise the intensity of the decay rate and then select quadratic.
